TOMORROW BRINGS us the 2007 Golden Globe awards. Every year I stare at the TV, praying that voters caught the brain waves I always send when they are deciding the winners. I scream in horror or triumph when the names are called.
This year I'm bringing you my predictions as to who should win at tomorrow's ceremony, in the hope that if I put them in writing I have a better chance of being right.
Best DramaNominees:
"24"
"Big Love"
"Grey's Anatomy"
"Heroes"
"Lost"
Who should win: "Heroes."
This show has totally rocked me and the rest of the people who are tuning in so far this season. I never guess where they are going next with the plot. Unlike "Lost," "Heroes" gives its audience answers much more quickly. The cast members are terrific, and you can't help but love every single one of them.
Who will win: Grey's Anatomy.
Let's face it; it is a terrific show, has great writing and is the critic's darling. At this point, I can't see anything beating it.
Best ComedyNominees:
"Desperate Housewives"
"Entourage"
"The Office"
"Ugly Betty"
"Weeds"
Who should win: "Ugly Betty."
It's arguably the best new show this season. The cast shines and it has a great leading lady. If any new show deserves to be recognized at this year's Globes, this is it
Who will win:
Toss up between "The Office" and "Ugly Betty." Voters for the Globes like to give credit to freshmen series so "Ugly Betty" has a good chance of winning, but "The Office" just might beat it out. I can't really comment on whether "The Office" should win as I don't get to watch it often, but from what I have read and heard it is a really strong contender.
Best Actor: Drama SeriesNominees:
Patrick Dempsey ("Grey's Anatomy")
Michael C. Hall ("Dexter")
Hugh Laurie ("House")
Bill Paxton ("Big Love")
Kiefer Sutherland ("24")
Who should win: Patrick Dempsey.
Reason for this choice? He's just so McDreamy oh and a good actor on top of that. I suppose that should count for something.
Who will win: Michael C. Hall.
He has been deemed by critics as a "serial killer who is lovable." I never thought that would be possible but Hall pulls it off to perfection. If he can pull that off, he deserves to win tomorrow!
Best Actress: Drama SeriesNominees:
Patricia Arquette ("Medium")
Edie Falco ("Sopranos")
Evangeline Lilly ("Lost")
Ellen Pompeo ("Grey's Anatomy")
Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer")
Who should win: Ellen Pompeo.
I know many people don't like her character, Meredith. But, in my opinion, Meredith is one of the best characters on TV. She's normal . She snores! Meredith tends to mess up all the time and has her problems, in other words she is far from perfect and Pompeo plays it all perfectly.
Who will win: While some critics are predicting Kyra Sedgwick, I have to agree with the majority and say that Edie Falco will probably win. If I remember correctly she has been nominated before but has never won so this is her last chance for the win and, again, not a show I watch, so I can't comment, but I have only heard praise for her performance.
Best Actress: ComedyNominees:
Marcia Cross ("Desperate Housewives")
America Ferrera ("Ugly Betty")
Felicity Huffman ("Desperate Housewives")
Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("The New Adventures of Old Christine")
Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds")
Who should win: America Ferrera.
I don't say this often, but I really can't see anyone else play the role of Betty except this girl. She has proven that she is a great comedic actress and a wonderful leading lady. This newcomer deserves some recognition.
Who will win: America Ferrera.
It seems to be the general consensus that Ferrera is the best choice for this win. Globe voters like to honor new breakout stars (case in point, Jennifer Garner and Keri Russell). Only thing that might stand in her way is the gals from "Desperate Housewives."
Best Actor: ComedyNominees:
Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock")
Zach Braff ("Scrubs")
Steve Carell ("The Office")
Jason Lee ("My Name is Earl")
Tony Shalhoub ("Monk")
Who should win: Alec Baldwin or Zach Braff.
Zach Braff completely deserves a win. Braff hasn't really been recognized all that much for his leading role on "Scrubs" and this could be his year. However, Baldwin's role as Tina Fey's boss in "30 Rock" is pure inspiration and has won me over even though I have never been much of a fan of his.
Who will win: Alec Baldwin.
As much as I love Braff, I think Baldwin has this win in the bag.
Now, before I get into the supporting actor/actress categories, let me just say that I think it stinks that the categories includes miniseries, movies, and series, so our beloved TV characters have to go up against some big-time actors.
Best Support ActressNominees:
Emily Blunt ("Gideon's Daughter")
Toni Collette ("Tsunami: The Aftermath")
Katherine Heigl ("Grey's Anatomy")
Sarah Paulson ("Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip")
Elizabeth Perkins ("Weeds")
Who should win: Katherine Heigl. Izzie has been a phenomenal character so far this season.
Who will win: Katherine Heigl. Yes, she is going against some big names and great performances, but she has certainly stood out this year.
Best Supporting ActorNominees:
Thomas Haden Church ("Broken Trail")
Jeremy Irons ("Elizabeth I")
Justin Kirk ("Weeds")
Masi Oka ("Heroes")
Jeremy Piven ("Entourage")
Who should win: Masi Oka. OK--if you haven't watched "Heroes" yet, tune in for just one episode and watch Oka as fans' beloved Hiro.
Who will win: Masi Oka. I repeat what I said about Heigl. He has shown like a star this year and people have certainly noticed. Jeremy Piven might give him some competition but I have a feeling that Oka's acceptance speech is already good to go and the world will get to hear it.
I have no idea if my predictions are correct. I'd give them about a 45 percent chance, but this is who would get the awards if I got to choose. Tune into NBC tomorrow at 8 to see if I'm right.
