Former JM star enrolls at Temple

Delano Green has accomplished a lot in a short period of time, but he has no plans of slowing down any time soon.

The former James Monroe High School star quarterback enrolled at Temple University yesterday after spending a semester at Fork Union Military Academy to improve test scores.

Green will officially sign with the Owls on Feb. 7, national signing day. He gave his oral commitment to Temple in November.

"It feels good to be here," Green said yesterday in a telephone interview from the Philadelphia school. "I just enrolled, and I'm ready to go."

Green needed to score 17 on his ACT exam to become eligible under NCAA guidelines. Yesterday, he said he scored a 19, freeing him up to enroll at Temple.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Green will play wide receiver for the Owls, who were 1-10 last season in former Virginia defensive coordinator Al Golden's first season as their head coach.

He had 22 receptions and four touchdowns for coach John Shuman, drawing scholarship offers from Temple and James Madison along the way.

"Delano was definitely the shock of everybody," Shuman said in December. "He came right in and was a play-maker."

Green was The Free Lance-Star's Player of the Year in 2005 after he led the Yellow Jackets to an 11-2 record and a trip to the Group AA, Division 3 semifinals.

He threw for 1,706 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior, while running for 760 yards and another eight scores.

Yellow Jackets coach Rich Serbay said Green's determination to get into college despite problems in his home life is what he's most proud of.

The public communications major has four years of eligibility and will be able to join the Owls for offseason workouts and spring practice.

"The most pleasing part of this thing is to know that when somebody puts their mind to something, they can do it," Serbay said. "Delano did it. I can't put into words how proud I am."

Asa Chapman's football future remains uncertain, Shuman said.

The former Orange High School defensive lineman enrolled at Fork Union in August after signing with Virginia last February.

Chapman still wants to attend Virginia, but may not qualify academically to do so.

While his name has been removed from the Cavaliers list of commitments on rivals.com, Shuman said Thursday there's still a chance Chapman will go to Virginia.

"We have our fingers crossed," Shuman said.
