Why don't we resolve to help out at an animal shelter?

Date published: 1/17/2007

Many of us made New Year's resolutions to exercise more, eat right, and things like that.

How about resolving to help out in the community by volunteering at the Orange County Animal Shelter?

You can even stick to your resolution to exercise more, by walking dogs. It's a win-win situation.

The shelter is such an amazing place to volunteer. The wonderful staff is knowledgeable about every animal in there.

It would be a great place for high school students to volunteer, especially if they need work-study and community service hours.

Some of the needs are bathing and brushing dogs to ready them for adoption at PETsMART, walking dogs, and socializing dogs and cats (just spending time with them one-on-one). Volunteers benefit from this as much as the animals do.

Or, if you're short on time but would like to help out, how about donating canned cat or dog food, dog treats, cat toys, or kitty litter? Those items are always welcome.

There's also an occasional need for loving foster homes for animals.

I know I always feel better after volunteering. Give it a try. You have nothing to lose, and even an hour of your time truly goes a long way! Please think about it. You'll be glad you did.
