Neil F. Maune

Neil Fording Maune, 75, of Fredericksburg died Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at Heritage Hall Health Care in King George County, after a long illness.

Mr. Maune was born Nov. 8, 1931, in St. Louis, Mo., to Leonard August and Azalea Mary Fording Maune.

After graduating from John Burroughs School in St. Louis, he attended the University of Virginia before serving in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War. He subsequently spent several years serving in the Army National Guard. While in the Army, he developed a love for military history, particularly the Civil War, that continued throughout his life.

In 1953, Mr. Maune returned to St. Louis to run the Maune Company/Profile Systems, a fabricating and engineering firm started by his father. After retiring from the Maune Companies, he moved to Fredericksburg in 1993. He then worked for the National Park Service, giving battlefield tours and staffing the Fredericksburg Battlefield bookstore.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Green Maune; six children, Ellen Maune Johns of Phoenix, Ariz., Todd Fording Taylor of St. Louis, Jenny Maune Thornhill of Slidell, La., Neil Fording Maune Jr. of Hannibal, Mo., Katherine Maune Howard of Plainfield, Ill., and Jane Maune Geisse of San Antonio, Texas; and two stepchildren, Caroline Green Polk of Charlottesville and Charles Martin Polk III of Richmond. He also is survived by 15 grandchildren; a sister, June Maune Teasdale, and a brother, Robert L. Maune, both of St. Louis.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, at St. George's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. James Dannals officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, 120 Chatham Lane, Fredericksburg, Va. 22405; or to St. George's Episcopal Church, 905 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
