Ann Perinchief Jarrell, 61, of Fredericksburg passed away Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at her residence.
Ann was born in Darby, Pa., on April 24, 1945. She was the daughter of Morris K. Perinchief and Louise P. Perinchief. She grew up in Mount Holly, N.J., where she graduated from Rancocas Valley High School in 1963. After high school, she enrolled in Mary Washington College. She graduated in 1967 and began working at the college, which was then a branch of the University of Virginia, in the admissions office. In 1970, she became the first full-time director of alumni affairs.
In 1972, she was accepted to William & Mary Law School. This was the same year that MWC became separated from UVA. In 1972, while a student at William & Mary, Gov. Robb appointed her as a trustee to the first independent board of trustees for the college.
She remained active in college affairs all her life and served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the College Community Orchestra for many years and one year as its president. Prior to the advent of personalized license plates, Sen. Chichester assigned her the license plate "MWC," a gift that she proudly displayed and cherished all her life.
After graduating from law school, she returned to Fredericksburg and took the position as assistant commonwealth's attorney of the city of Fredericksburg under H. Harrison Braxton. Upon Mr. Braxton's retirement from that position, she was appointed by Judge John Jamison as the commonwealth's attorney. Thereafter, she was elected three times to that position. She was the first female to serve as commonwealth's attorney in the city of Fredericksburg.
Throughout her life, she was active in community-related activities. She served as president of the Rappahannock Area United Way and served for many years on that organization's Board of Directors. She was on the organizing Board of Directors of the Fredericksburg HIV- AIDS Support Group and, after her retirement, assisted in the city's Victim Witness Program.
She is survived by her husband, James E. Jarrell Jr.; her stepson, James E. "Jay" Jarrell III; her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth O. Jarrell; her grandchildren, James E. Jarrell IV and Julianne E. Jarrell, all of Fredericksburg. She is also survived by a brother, Morris K. Perinchief of Kutztown, Pa., and a sister, Linda P. Zevitas of Marston's Mill, Mass.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Fredericksburg Baptist Church, with the Rev. J. Larry Haun officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronald L. Hicks, Phillip Sasser, John W. Jarrell, Rick E. Hall, Arthur Terry and David Perinchief. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, at Covenant Funeral Service.
