BECAUSE I SAID SO (PG-13) HH
STARRING: DIANE KEATON, MANDY MOORE, LAUREN GRAHAM, PIPER RUNNING TIME: 102 MIN. With Keaton more than a little over the top, in a tale fairly similar to the premise of her 2003 movie "Something's Gotta Give," this isn't perfect. But luckily for those looking for a fun, light comedy, a less-than-perfect Keaton is still worth seeing. And the rest of the cast is strong enough to make this more than just a retread of Keaton's last movie about a 60-something woman trying to find her dream guy. The biggest surprise to many may be the competent, appealing performance given by the young Mandy Moore. She plays one of the three daughters Keaton's character can't help but meddle with. Because Moore's character isn't married yet, she gets the lion's share of her mother's never-ending matchmaking. The gimmick here: Keaton's character runs an ad to find the perfect mate for her youngest daughter. From that ad and the rounds of meetings she holds with those who answer, two interesting guys appear. One (Tom Everett Scott) seems the perfect guy: a good-looking, rich architect who's shopping for a wife. But a down-to-earth musician (Gabriel Macht) also appeals to her. It all proceeds pretty predictably, especially the part where Keaton's character realizes she kind of likes the musician's dad (Stephen Collins). Adding interest in the cast are Lauren Graham ("Gilmore Girls") and Piper Perabo as the other two quirky daughters. Yes, the whole family-of-women subplot may frustrate some guys who think this too much a chick flick. But the men in the cast hold their own, and there's enough lighthearted fun to make this a passable way to spend an evening approaching Valentine's Day. Rated PG-13 for sexual content including dialogue, some mature thematic material and partial nudity. [RF, RA, M] THE MESSENGERS (PG-13) HSTARRING: KRISTEN STEWART, DYLAN MCDERMOTT, PENELOPE ANN MILLER, JOHN CORBETT RUNNING TIME: 84 MIN. The message you wish you got from the creepy spirits running around in this weak, creaky tale is simple: Run away! Leave the theater now while you can!
