Fredericksburg.com - Wife charged with beating husband

Deputies kicked down a door early yesterday to rescue a man who they said was being pummeled by his wife in his Spotsylvania County home.

Capt. Will Petry said dispatchers received a 911 call from a cell phone about 2:45 a.m. The call came from the Grantwood subdivision, but authorities couldn't immediately pinpoint the location.

A second call came a short time later, and this time dispatchers heard a man in the background screaming for help.

Deputies Daniel Babcock and Kevin Walsh got to a home on Sharon Road about six minutes later and heard yelling and screaming inside, Petry said.

After the deputies knocked on the door, the man yelled for them to kick it down. They did.

They found 29-year-old Sean Foy bleeding heavily from the head and falling down a flight of stairs, Petry said.

His wife was right behind him, still swinging at him. Deputies restrained her and called for help for her husband.

An investigation revealed that Foy and his wife, 30-year-old Meredith Courtney Brown, had just returned from an outing during which Foy played with his band.

The couple had been separated, but had gotten back together that night, Petry said.

It was not clear what they were arguing about, but police accuse Brown of repeatedly bashing her husband in the head with a glass coffee cup.

Brown was charged with malicious wounding, domestic assault and battery and preventing someone from calling 911. Petry said she is accused of taking Foy's cell phone and breaking it after he called 911 a second time.

She was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Foy was treated at Mary Washington Hospital and released.

Brown's arrest record lists her occupation as a teacher in Spotsylvania. However, a secretary with the county school system yesterday said there was no record of her in the files.

I've seen this woman beat this man several times before this incodent. He is a victim. He loved her and he didn't deserve the violence. She's punched him in the face and pushed him off a deck. He never once layed a hand on her even to defend himself.

I am a long time resident of Fredericksburg and I happened to know both of the individuals involved in this recent incident. I have been reading the local paper for years. However, I now question the validity of EVERY article I read. I have never been so appalled with an article in our local paper. First and foremost everyone needs to know that Ms. Brown is not the monster she is made to look like and Mr. Foy is hardly a victim. This article is not based on facts and is FALSE in many regards. I can’t believe our local paper would go as far as to SLANDER a resident’s character without accurate facts. As if this situation will not be difficult enough for Ms. Brown, whom I believe is the REAL victim here, but now she has the added stress (of the possibility) of her entire hometown holding negative judgments. No one has the right to judge another couple’s relationship – one cannot possibly know the complete truth about something that they are not involved in! As for the articles title – “Police break into home to rescue battered husband.” – SPARE ME!! This man is at least a foot taller, much stronger, a previous marine, and was at someone else’s home, Ms. Brown’s home!! My question is…why didn’t this “so-called battered husband” get in his car and leave?? I have empathy for several people, but I have absolutely NONE for Mr. Foy. As for the Free Lance Star – its no joke to ruin other’s lives with FALSE SLANDER – get the facts straight!!

...regardless of the gender of the offender or victim. This woman is not an anomaly; there are women who habitually abuse their husbands or boyfriends. Just as there are men who habitually abuse their partners. The real problem is a culture that sees violence as power.

The Web site DVstats.com shows enormous scholarly and peer-reviewed research on domestic violence against males. There is plenty of evidence to show that men are victimized by female-initiated violence just as often as the reverse. You may think a man's stature (compared to a woman's) makes violence against him trivial. But if he's not fighting back, or if he's cornered or attacked with weapons, the violence can cause great harm (like the coffee mug in this story). Uninterrupted violence ends in death.
