The 14th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's basketball team held visiting Goucher College to nine first half points en route to an 82-36 victory over the Gophers yesterday at Goolrick Gymnasium.
The Eagles (21-2,11-1 Capital Athletic Conference) clinched the top seed in the upcoming CAC Tournament with its win and York's loss to Marymount yesterday.
Junior guard Sarah Flanagan led the Eagles with 17 points while junior center Liz Hickey added 14 points, ninerebounds, five blocked shots and four assists.
Goucher was led by Shadae Swan's 16 points.
UMW will host St. Mary's College Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. in a CAC contest.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Eagles broke the school record for 3-pointers made in a game for the fourth time this season, connecting on 22 long-range shots in 40 attempts in a 100-59 win over Goucher at Goolrick Gymnasium yesterday.
UMW (15-7, 9-5 CAC) used balanced scoring to defeat the Gophers, as six players reached double figures. Justin Baker led the Eagles with a triple-double (13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) while teammates Kiernan Whitworth, Mike Lee, and A.J. Fitzgerald each scored 14 points.
Goucher was led by Pierre Jones' 26 points and seven rebounds.
The Eagles will host St. Mary's Wednesday at 8 p.m. in a key conference game at Goolrick Gymnasium.
Swimming
On Friday, UMW's Maureen Greenlee took part in three CAC-record swims, capturing the 50-yard freestyke (24.12) and anchoring the Eagles to relay wins in the 200 medley (1:37.50) and 400 medley (3:57.91). Amy Carlson also swam on both relays.
The Eagle women also got a 1-2-3 finish in the 050 free, led by Abby Koch (5:11.06).
For the men, Dale Parker claimed the 50 free (21.34) and Luke Moss won the 200 individual medley (1:58.03). Both swam on the winning 400 medley (3:33.67), but the Eagles' 200 medley team was disqualified.
