A retired Fairfax County fire and rescue chief started last week as a Stafford deputy county administrator.
Mike Neuhard, 51, will divide responsibilities with Anthony Romanello, who has so far held the assistant's post alone.
Neuhard will handle community-development-related activities, including planning, code, utilities and transportation.
He plans to spend his first few months meeting with departments and learning about the county.
"I want to understand the people and the processes in place already," he said. "I'm excited about the opportunity to be here in Stafford. There are a lot of good things going on in the county government."
Neuhard started as a Fairfax firefighter in 1977, came up through the ranks and become department head in 2003. There he supervised a staff of more than 1,700 people. He also was responsible for major department development and capital improvement projects.
He retired in February but continues to serve on the Virginia Wireless E-911 Services Board and the Secure Commonwealth Panel.
He holds an associate degree in fire science management from Northern Virginia Community College. Mary Washington College awarded him a bachelor's degree in liberal studies in 1999.
He's been a Stafford resident since 1982. He and his wife, Jill, have three children--Chris, Ryan and Jennifer.
Neuhard expects his county residency will aid him in his job.
"Being a resident I have some ownership over what happens in Stafford County," he said.
