Aaron Altscher may have simply been too nice a guy for Donald Trump.
During Sunday's broadcast of "The Apprentice" on NBC, Trump said "You're fired," to the Mary Washington College graduate and Spotsylvania County resident.
Throughout the show, Altscher was reluctant to snipe at rivals in boardroom meetings.
He led his team to wins two weeks in a row, but was defeated in Sunday's episode, which was taped last summer in Los Angeles. Then The Donald dropped the ax.
"Trump was not really happy with my assertiveness toward the other team [in the boardroom]," Altscher, 25, said during a phone interview between cable news show tapings.
That, combined with having been his team's project manager three weeks in a row "led to my downfall," he said.
He was project manager for his team's first two victories after members spent weeks living in a tent because of losses under another project manager.
But Altscher seemingly wasn't ruthless enough in promoting himself to Trump.
Savaging others in the boardroom is a big part of what makes the show go, but "that isn't really my personality," Altscher said. "And that level of aggression usually isn't displayed in a professional work environment. I usually keep my emotions tucked inside my coat, where they're supposed to be."
Altscher, a Maryland native, was featured in the "Men of Mary Washington" calendar when he was a student at what is now the University of Mary Washington. He also was an NCAA baseball star at MWC and played for the semipro Meadows Farms baseball team the past two seasons.
In order to do the show and subsequent public appearances, Altscher took a leave of absence as a community sales manager for Del Webb, a national developer specializing in active-adult communities.
Now, trying to take advantage of exposure from the show, he said he's put his Spotsylvania house up for sale and is circulating his resume in bigger markets like New York, Washington and Baltimore.
"No matter what the outcome was, it's really going to take me a long way personally and professionally," Altscher said. "It's been such a wild ride and I think it's really going to pay off."
