Joseph J. Stark Jr.

Joseph John Stark Jr., 85, of Locust Grove, formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, and Green-ville, Pa., passed away Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10, 2007, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Nov. 28, 1921, in Akron, Ohio, to Joseph J. Stark Sr. and Rose Barbara Kuntz Stark.

He was a graduate of St. Vincent High School in Akron and a 1953 graduate of The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., with a B.S. degree in civil engineering.

Joseph was a lifelong railroad enthusiast, starting his career with the C&O Railroad in Huntington, W.Va., and then working for the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad in Greenville, Pa., for 20 years, where the family resided. He then transferred to the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Co. and the family resided there until his retirement.

He was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fredericksburg and had previously been a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Greenville, where he served on the parish council and was president for many years.

He served in the U.S. Army Infantry, 338th Engineers, during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Williams of Locust Grove, whom he married Dec. 31, 1949; four daughters, Suzan J. Slezak of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jan M. Ruffo and her husband, Dave, of Culpeper County, Barbara A. Keenan and her husband, Joe, of Stafford County, and Christine M. Slattery and her husband, Jim, of Fredericksburg; one son, Joseph J. Stark III and his wife, Mary, of Newport News; 13 grandchildren, Tana, Stefanie and Bradley Dlezak, David, Danielle and James Ruffo, John and Joseph Keenan, Melissa, Joseph IV and Michael Stark and Elizabeth and Catherine Slattery.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Martha Huggins; and a grandson, Christian Joseph Slezak.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at St. Michael Roman Catholic Church, 85 North High St., Greenville, with the Rev. James Campbell, parochial vicar of St. Michael, as celebrant. Burial with committal and military honors will be in St. Michael Cemetery in Greenville.
