Norman G. April, 79, a retired analyst with the Defense Intelligence Agency, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at Mary Washington Hospital from complications due to pneumonia.

Mr. April served in the intelligence field for nearly 30 years in a number of covert operations and sensitive positions focusing on Eastern Europe and Warsaw Pact countries. During the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. April held a number of field assignments in Germany.

In 1969, he temporarily left the intelligence field to take a teaching post at Park College, now part of the University of Missouri in Kansas City, where he taught political science focusing on Marxist theory and the Soviet Union.

After spending eight years as a bank examiner with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Mr. April returned to the DIA, where he served as regional desk officer for Eastern Europe and later Northeast Asia until his retirement in 1993.

A native of Salem, Mass., Mr. April graduated (both B.A. and M.A.) magna cum laude from the Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington, D.C., and was fluent in Hungarian, French and German.

He retired from the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Mr. April loved books and learning and instilled in all his children a love for learning, teaching and creating. He was an avid collector of books and enjoyed traveling and listening to classical music.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany, where he met his wife of over 45 years, Ingeborg Maria Oechsner, a native of Wurzburg, Germany, who now resides in Fredericksburg.

In addition to his wife, Ingeborg, he is survived by his half sister, Dottie Molineaux of Norfolk; three daughters, Ingrid Levey of Alexandria, Leah April of Washington, D.C., and Sandra April of New York City; one son, David April of Philadelphia; and one granddaughter, Gwen Levey.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fredericksburg on Friday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations for Parkinson's disease research can be sent to Georgetown University Hospital Neurology Development Fund, Development Office, Georgetown University Hospital, 3800 Reservoir Road, Washington, D.C. 20007.
