Eagles fall to Catholic in finale

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to Catholic University, 74-61, yesterday to close the regular season with a 15-9 overall record and a 9-7 conference play.
Catholic jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead, and despite being outrebounded by UMW (33-30) came away with the 13-point win.
A.J. Fitzgerald led the Eagles with 13 points and five rebounds, while Justin Baker had 12 points and seven rebounds and Kiernan Whitworth 12 points and six rebounds.
Nick Olivero led Catholic with 16 points.
By virtue of UMW's 1-3 head-to-head records with Marymount University (3--1) and St. Mary's College (2-2), who both won yesterday and also stand with 9-7 CAC records, the Eagles fall to the sixth seed in the CAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday.
The Eagles will visit York College Tuesday at 8 p.m. in quarterfinal action.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Eagles didn't have their best shooting day, but they did have one of their best rebounding days of the season in a 58-43 win at Catholic in their regular-season finale yesterday.
The Eagles hauled in 59 rebounds to 32 for the Cardinals, including 25 offensive boards, in the 15-point win. Senior forward Lisa Tracy grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds and recorded 11 points, while junior center Liz Hickey added seven points, 11 rebounds, and five blocked shots.
The Eagles close the regular season with a 23-2 overall record, and are 13-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play. UMW will host eighth-seeded Gallaudet University Tuesday at Goolrick Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
SWIMMING
The Eagles' men's and women's swim teams fared well on a limited basis at the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary's College yesterday.
The women's 200 medley relay (Mallory Cruise, Tricia Dilger, Amy Carlson, and Maureen Greenlee) broke the CAC record with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:48.01.
Laura Graesser bested her lifetime best in the 400 IM with a time of 4:39.81. Tricia Dilger broke the CAC record by a second and a half with a time of 2:24.15
The Eagles will find out on Thursday how many swimmers will attend the NCAA championships in Houston, Texas, March 15-17.
TENNIS
The 11th-ranked men's tennis team swept Roanoke College, 7-0, yesterday at the University Indoor Tennis Center to improve to 2-1 on the season, and 1-0 against Division III opponents. T
MEN'S LACROSSE
The Eagles fell 18-13 in their season opener at seventh-ranked Roanoke College yesterday.
Morrell led UMW with four goals and two assists, while Scott Fletcher scored twice and added one assist.
