Leonard Vanderveld Jr.

The Rev. Dr. Leonard Vanderveld Jr., 80, a resident of Woodford for the past 19 years, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007.

He was born July 28, 1926, in Paterson, N.J. He graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in history in 1950, and in 1958 received a master's degree in school administration from William Paterson University of Wayne, N.J.

For additional studies, he received Doctor of Ministry and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from International Seminary in Plymouth, Fla.

Later, he was awarded a Doctor of Religious Education degree and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Fredericksburg Bible Institute and Seminary, where he had been academic dean and Bible professor for over 10 years.

He served as interim pastor of Flat Run Baptist Church in Locust Grove and, prior to moving to Virginia, was an administrator and professor at Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Clarks Summit, Pa., for 19 years.

Prior to those years, he was an elementary grade teacher and principal in the Franklin Lakes, N.J., public school system.

Most recently, as a member of Round Oak Baptist Church in Corbin, he had served as a deacon, Bible teacher and on numerous committees.

During World War II, Rev. Vanderveld served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific theater and participated in the Okinawa invasion. He received a second lieutenant's commission in the U.S. Army through the ROTC and was recalled during the Korean War for overseas duty.

He later served as a special agent with the Army CID during the Vietnam War and retired from the Army as a chief warrant officer.

He served as a captain in the Virginia Defense Force and was former deputy town sergeant with the Bowling Green Police Department.

For many years, he was an NRA distinguished marksman and weapons instructor.

In Pennsylvania, he served as a state forest fire warden and volunteer fire chief. For the past nine years, he served as chairman of the Grants and Fellowship Committee of the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation in Quantico.

He also was a life member of the NRA, the Marine Corps Association and Spotsylvania Post 320 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his four children, Ralph Vanderveld of Scranton, Pa., Joy Hopper of Woodford, the Rev. Timothy Vanderveld of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary Elizabeth Fanton of Dillsburg Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was the son of the late Leonard Vanderveld Sr. and Ruth Sutton Vanderveld and also was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elaine Jackson "Jackie" Vanderveld.

A funeral will be held Thursday, Feb. 22, at noon at Round Oak Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
