Sarah L. Shelton

Sarah Louise Sullivan Shelton, the last of 11 children of Frank Pierce and Sarah Jane Rodgers Sullivan, went peacefully to be with her Lord from her Falmouth home on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at the age of 86.

She was born June 14, 1920, at the family home located on the corner of Fall Hill Avenue and Progress Street in what was then Spotsylvania County.

Mrs. Shelton attended the public school on the campus of Mary Washington College. Sarah and George A. Shelton had been married 63 years when he died in February 2004. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her caregivers and nephews, J. Richard Garnett Jr. of Fredericksburg and Kenneth E. Nicholson of Falmouth; and a large number of nieces and nephews from both the Sullivan and Shelton sides of the family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Frank, Jesse, Sydney, Howard, John and Fred; and her sisters, Rena, Eunice, Louola and Lillian.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with the Rev. Patti English officiating. Burial will be in the Shelton family cemetery in Falmouth.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be J. Richard Garnett Jr., Kenneth E. Nicholson, Stephen J. Garnett, William T. Garnett, Kenneth W. Sullivan and John Usher Jr.

Memorials may be made in memory of Sarah Shelton to Fredericksburg Baptist Church, 1019 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401.
