The University of Mary Washington's baseball team swept Messiah College 8-5 and 8-2 yesterday in its 2007 debut at Dickinson Stadium.
In the first game, Riley Gorman, Eric Fitzgerald, Ray Moore, and Tom McDermott each doubled and Donny Price tripled. Fitzgerald, Price, and Chase Townsend each knocked in a pair of runs as well. Brett Diamond allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 innings for the win in the win.
In the second game, Price, Townsend, and Moore paced the Eagles with two hits each and Mike O'Donnell added two steals and two runs scored. Sophomore Wes Hayden allowed just two hits in six innings with 12 strikeouts for the victory.
The Eagles (2-0) will host sixth-ranked SUNY-Cortland today at 1 p.m.
SoftballThe Eagles split their doubleheader opener Messiah College at the Battleground yesterday, losing the opener, 4-2, but winning nightcap, 1-0.
In the first game, the Falcons scored in the first, second, fourth, and seventh innings to earn the win. Katherine Matusik took the loss for the Eagles, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings.
In game two, Ashley Sifer knocked in Victoria Moody after Moody doubled in the only run of the game. Jamie Clevenger and Melissa Bjorklund also had hits for the Eagles. Kirsten Rowell got the win, striking out three and walking one in seven innings.
The Eagles will play in the Virginia Wesleyan College Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Women's lacrosseThe 12th-ranked Eagles opened the season with a 17-3 win at Villa Julie College in Stevenson, Md.
Seniors Meaghan O'Leary and Kaitlyn Barker and junior Caitlin Erickson each scored three goals to pace the Eagles (1-0).
Margaret Murray added two goals for UMW while Ashley Scutari and Emily Talbot registered a goal and two assists apiece
The Eagles will visit Sweet Briar College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Men's LacrosseThe Eagles dropped a 13-6 decision at Hampden-Sydney College yesterday to fall to 0-2 on the season. Freshman Dan Coates had two goals and sophomore Sean Brown had two goals and one assist for the Eagles.
The Tigers outshot the Eagles, 34-24, and were 3-3 on extra man opportunities. UMW scored four man-up goals in eight opportunities.
The Eagles will host Hood College Wednesday in theie home opener at 3:30 p.m.
Men's tennisThe University of Mary Washington 11th-ranked men's tennis team fell to 12th-ranked Trinity University, 6-3, yesterday at the ITA National Indoor Championships in St. Peter, Minn. The Eagles fall to 2-3 on the season.
UMW got a win from John James and Zach Detwiler in doubles and Randy Loden and Jon Pollak won in singles play.
