Manahan to take skills to JMU

Battlefield notebook

BY TAFT COGHILL JR.

Chancellor High School three-sport standout Ken Manahan has decided what sport he'll concentrate on and where he'll play it.

The Chargers senior has excelled in football, basketball and soccer for four years.

Last week, he decided to sign a letter of intent to play soccer for James Madison University in Harrisonburg.

"They've got a young team and they're looking for a kid to come in and possibly start," Manahan said yesterday. "Maybe there will be a good opportunity there."

Manahan was an all-Battlefield District punter, defensive back and wide receiver for the Chargers football team.

He was an all-district and all-Region I forward for the boys basketball squad that won its first-ever district regular season and tournament titles this past season.

But he's also an all-state goalkeeper for the Chargers.

He wanted to play football, but the 6-foot-4, 190-pound Manahan received no scholarship offers.

He considered becoming a walk-on punter at JMU. He said yesterday he also considered walking on at Maryland and Virginia to play football.

College soccer is played in the fall so he won't be able to double-up in sports with the Dukes.

"He's a diamond in the rough," Chargers football coach Bob Oliver said of Manahan in January. "He's one of the best athletes we've ever had come through our school as far as being the total package."

Posey added to game

Former King George High School and current James Madison shooting guard Joe Posey has been added to the lineup for the Where Are They Now? game, contest organizer Andre Catlett said yesterday.

Catlett also said former Caroline standout Damian Woolfolk won't participate because of a foot injury.

Former Chancellor standout Michael Robinson and ex-Massaponax guard Jeremy Hence, who plays for the Army developmental team, were also added to the list.

The game will be played on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Courtland High School.

Admission is $5 in advance and $8 at the door.

Tickets can be bought in advance at Massaponax High School, Chancellor, Caroline, James Monroe and Spotsylvania.

Donohue makes decision

James Monroe senior girls soccer standout Katie Donohue has decided to continue her career at Brevard College, a Division II school in Asheville, N.C.

Donohue, a sweeper, was a second-team all-Battlefield selection last season.

She said Brevard seemed like the right fit because, "I just like the coach and all the players were very welcoming."

Donohue chose Brevard over St. Andrews Presbyterian College, which is also in North Carolina.
