Car crash kills man Date published: 3/26/2007
BY DONNIE JOHNSTON
A two-vehicle crash in Culpeper yesterday that resulted in one fatality makes a great case for wearing seat belts. Shortly after 11 a.m., a 1986 Ford F-350 pickup truck, heading east and driven by 38-year-old Andrew Lee Marks of Lignum, attempted to pass a 1987 BMW driven by 21-year-old Cynthia Wong Din of Harrisonburg on State Route 3, about two-tenths of a mile east of Carrico Mills Road, according to Sgt. Les Tyler of the Virginia State Police. The extended-cab pickup sideswiped the BMW, and both vehicles lost control and rolled over, the truck twice and the car once, Tyler said. No one in the pickup was wearing a seat belt, and three of the four people in the truck, including the driver, were ejected, Tyler said. Marks was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 12-year-old daughter and another back-seat passenger, 53-year-old Thomas Lynwood Williams, were flown to the University of Virginia Hospital. The daughter's name was not available. Jessica Dawn Marks, Andrew Lee Marks' wife, was sitting in the front passenger seat and was the only person in the vehicle not ejected, Tyler said. She was taken to Culpeper Regional Hospital for treatment. Neither Din nor her passenger, 21-year-old Phil Kreutizer of Harrisonburg, was injured. Both were wearing seat belts, Tyler said. The BMW landed on its wheels after flipping. The vehicles were about a mile from the four-lane highway at Lignum when the accident, which closed Route 3 for about two hours, occurred. No charges have been filed pending further investigation by Trooper K.B. Highland. Members of the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office and the Richardsville and Brandy fire departments assisted, Tyler said. Donnie Johnston:Email: djohnston@freelancestar.com
