When R.J. Cornelio made his first start for North Stafford's boys basketball team as a sophomore, he was a long-range shooting specialist who hardly ever ventured into the paint.
Three seasons later, Cornelio's improved quickness and aggressiveness landed him a scholarship from one of the nation's top Division II programs.
Cornelio, a first-team all-Commonwealth District selection as a senior, will play for Pfeiffer (N.C.) College next year.
"I just like the way they play basketball. Their style of offense really fits my game," Cornelio said yesterday.
Cornelio, who averaged a team-high 16.7 points per game last season, joins a Pfeiffer team that led Division II in scoring (92 points per game) and finished the season ranked in the national top 25.
Cornelio worked out for another Division II program (Milligan, Tenn.) and two Division III schools (Chowan and Hartwick), but he was confident he could play on Pfeiffer's level all along.
"I walk on the floor now knowing I'm going to score, that I can take my guy. That definitely wasn't the case two years ago," he said.
HOT COMMODITY
Brooke Point junior linebacker Donovan Miles already holds scholarship offers from Virginia, Virginia Tech, Maryland and West Virginia.
But with perennial national powers Georgia, Michigan and Tennessee beginning to show increasing levels of interest, Miles isn't going to rush the most important decision of his young life.
"Everything is still up in the air. He really likes the local schools, but he's going to see what else is out there," Brooke Point football coach Jeff Berry said.
Miles (6-0, 210 pounds), a transfer from West Springfield, was named first-team all-Commonwealth District after finishing with 107 tackles, 11 sacks and 26 tackles for loss for the second-place Black-Hawks.
Miles' recruiting stock took a big jump when Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster came to Stafford County to watch film of him in February.
"Within the first five plays, [Foster] was sold," Berry said.
Virginia Tech and Virginia, both of whom have grown accustomed to landing the cream of the Commonwealth's high school crop every year, have plenty of competition for Miles' services.
West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez visited Brooke Point last week. Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen made an appearance at the school yesterday.
And it's not going to stop any time soon, either. National Signing Day isn't until next February.
MAKING A RACKET
Several area tennis players will continue their march to the Group AAA state tournament tomorrow at the Northwest Region championships.
Stafford's John Talsman and Phil Pegalow, the No. 2 team from the Commonwealth District, will compete in the doubles quarterfinals at E.C. Glass. Colonial Forge's Steve Cappetta will play in the singles draw.
On the girls side, Stafford's Cassie Carver takes an unbeaten record into her singles quarterfinal match tomorrow at Albemarle.
