A man with his face painted as a clown got away with about $6,000 worth of prescription drugs after robbing a Fredericksburg pharmacy late Sunday, police said.

City police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the robber entered CVS near Mary Washington Hospital about 10:30 p.m.

He was wearing a black top hat with fake hair under it and "clown-like" face paint. He approached a clerk at the pharmacy and handed her a note demanding OxyContin from the safe.

The suspect had his hand under a white shirt and claimed to have a gun. No gun was ever displayed, Bledsoe said.

The robber got OxyContin and Methadone in the heist. OxyContin is a potent pain reliever that is highly addictive and often sold illegally on the streets; Methadone is a drug designed primarily to treat addictions to such drugs as heroin and morphine.

Bledsoe said that while one employee was opening the safe, the robber made another give him the cash from a register. A relatively small amount of cash was taken, police said.

The robber took the stolen goods and left the store. It was not clear where he went after that or if he left in a vehicle.

The suspect was described as a white male between 18 and 20, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 150 pounds. he was wearing blue jeans, a black T-shirt and white tennis shoes.

While the robbery was in progress, two other young white males entered the store and left without making a purchase.

Bledsoe said it wasn't clear if they were associated with the robber.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call city police at 372-1055.
