Police arrest man for theft of car
Theft suspect makes it easy for police

BY KEITH EPPS A Florida man was arrested in Stafford County early Saturday with a car he was charged with stealing from a used car lot in Spotsylvania the previous day, police said. The man acknowledged to authorities he was drunk and threatened to kick out a deputy's cruiser window if he wasn't "taken to jail in three seconds," Stafford sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said. Kennedy said Deputy Nathan Thompson was sent to the water treatment plant on Coal Landing Road shortly after midnight after receiving a report about a trespasser there. As the deputy was turning from U.S. 1 onto Coal Landing, a speeding vehicle came toward him and crossed a double yellow line. Thompson followed the car north on U.S. 1 to Austin Drive, where the driver made a left turn into a Wawa convenience store. Kennedy said the driver drove up on a curb and around the business, where he stopped in a field and turned his lights off. Thompson pulled up near him moments later. When the deputy asked the man what was going on, Kennedy said, the man got out with his hands raised and replied, "drunk driving." Police said the man also admitted trying to hide from the deputy and refused to take sobriety tests. He cursed loudly while the deputy was completing a report and threatened to damage the back window of the cruiser if Thompson didn't speed up the process. After placing the man in jail, Kennedy said, Thompson learned that the 1999 Subaru he was driving had been stolen from a car lot in Spotsylvania. According to a release from the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office, the car was reported stolen from Triforce Auto Sales in Thornburg about 10:45 a.m. Daniel E. Reynolds, 52, of St. Petersburg, Fla., is charged with grand larceny of a vehicle, petty larceny, unauthorized use of a vehicle, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, destruction of property, possession of stolen property, eluding police, refusing to take a breath test and driving on a suspended license.
