Real-estate agent enters Chancellor race
Dorsey will challenge incumbent Hap Connors for Spotsylvania board seat

Real-estate agent Mark Dorsey thinks voters should have a choice in the November election for the Chancellor District seat on the Board of Supervisors.

So, when Spotsylvania County Republican Committee Chairman Robert Stuber called him Tuesday to ask if he'd run for election against incumbent Hap Connors, Dorsey said yes.

"I am doing it because I think you owe something more to the community than just paying taxes," he said.

Dorsey, 54, served on the Planning Commission from 1996 to 2000. He's a retired Army officer and former president of the Lake Wilderness Property Owners Association.

Stuber said Dorsey's military, business and civic experiences qualify him for the seat.

Dorsey said he's a fiscal conservative who is concerned about the "shell game" the board plays with taxes.

His home assessment, like most in the county, has skyrocketed. And although the tax rate has remained low, he still pays a higher tax bill each year. He said he'll search for ways to trim the county budget.

One idea he said will save taxpayers is to build schools with three or more floors.

Dorsey said he'd approach decisions to ensure a "win-win situation."

"I don't claim to have all the answers," he said. "I just think I can add to the overall discussion."
