WALL WORK >> Many take part in art project
MOREart! project progressing
Date published: 6/21/2007

Yesterday's overcast skies and occasional drizzle were a welcome relief from the heat for the those working on a community art project at Roxbury Farm and Garden Center. Ashley McNeil (center) and Joy Cunningham, both 14, use sticks to remove excess thinset cement from around mirrored tiles on the mosaic mural.

City Mayor Tom Tomzak stopped by to "butter" a few tiles and add them to the wall. "I can't ruin this, can I?" he joked.

As the volunteers worked, passersby along Jackson Street slowed their cars, craned their necks, and offered encouragement.

Yesterday, the mural's words "NURTURE DIVERSITY" and "CULTIVATE HARMONY" went up, and as they did, so did a cheer. The Multicultural OutReach Effort's art team will finish working on the mural today and tomorrow, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are welcome. Visit morefred ericksburg.org for information.
