WASHINGTON (AP) - Senator David Vitter is apologizing for what he calls "a very serious sin" in his past.

The Louisiana Republican's telephone number appeared among those associated with an escort service operated by the so-called "DC Madam."

Vitter's spokesman confirmed the statement in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press.

In his statement, Vitter says he "received forgiveness from God" and his wife several years ago. He goes on to offer his "deep and sincere apologies" to all he has "disappointed and let down in any way."

The statement containing Vitter's apology says his telephone number was on old phone records of an escort service before he ran for the Senate.

Deborah Jeane Palfrey has been accused in federal court of racketeering by running a prostitution ring. Palfrey contends, however, that her agency, Pamela Martin and Associates, was a legitimate business.
