Police briefs Date published: 8/23/2007 By Ellen Biltz Caroline man pleads to assaulting officer
A man who was to be arraigned and tried for a felony assault and battery of a Caroline County sheriff's deputy yesterday ended up with two months in jail, which he had already served. John Lamont Walton repeated the words "thank you" over and over after finding out that Commonwealth's Attorney Harvey Latney would reduce his charges to a misdemeanor assault if he'd plead guilty. The judge ordered him to serve six months in jail, four suspended with credit for time served and to pay his court costs. Walton had already served two months in jail. The deputy he was charged with assaulting, J.K. Miller didn't testify. Suspect being sought on bank bag theftA man approached a Dollar General employee trying to make a night deposit at the BB&T on Mine Road in Spotsylvania County and pushed her to the ground before stealing the cash Tuesday night. As she was about to drop off the bank bag about 8:45 p.m., a man came out from behind the bushes, pushed her, grabbed the bag and ran down U.S. 1, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott. The man was described as black, 5-foot-7, wearing a dark-colored T-shirt and blue jeans and black stocking cap over his face. He is wanted for a strong arm robbery charge. Scott said the victim's mother, who was sitting in their vehicle, witnessed the incident and tried to throw an object at the man. The victim was not injured and the amount of money stolen is undisclosed, Scott said. Man facing charges after clash with wifeA fight between a Spotsylvania County man and his wife ended with charges of attempted malicious wounding against the man, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott. Alva Ralph Brooks, 46, who was also charged with abduction, was taken into custody at his Kerrydale Court residence after his wife called 911, Scott said. Scott said the wife told police when she came to the house, her husband produced a gun and threatened to shoot her. The woman then ran away only to be tackled in the yard, she said. She was able to calm him down and tell him she needed to leave for an appointment and then went to a neighbor's house to call police, Scott said. Brooks is in Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond. --Ellen Biltz
So, the paper isn't supposed to print felony arrests?
There are too many cases where a victim has made their stories known that have given others the strength to come forward and report what is happening to them. One of the many things an abuser does is make their victim think no one will help or believe them. ALL victims should scream out their abuser's name and let it be known that society will no longer tolerate it. The victim has nothing to be ashamed of, the abuser should be known for what he or she is.
This needs to be printed, so people will know and understand they will go to jail for the crimes they commit
Maybe more domestic abuse victims would come forward if they knew their family problems wouldn't be printed for all the world to see.
