Deaths tied to remote control
Police think two men were slain in argument over a remote control

Date published: 9/18/2007

BY DONNIE JOHNSTON

An argument over the TV remote control may have led to a double murder Thursday in Fauquier County.

"It is my understanding that these people were mad at each other about who was using the channel changer and sitting in certain chairs," Fauquier County Sheriff Charlie Ray Fox said yesterday.

The resulting altercation, which occurred on Blackwells Mill Road near Goldvein Thursday night, left 83-year-old Robert E. Hawkins Sr. and his son, 35-year-old Robert E. Hawkins Jr., dead.

Anthony James Poole, who is Hawkins Sr.'s son-in-law and the younger Hawkins' brother-in-law, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder.

All three men lived at the Blackwells Mill Road residence, according to Maj. Paul Mercer.

Deputies were called to the home about 8:11 after a shooting was reported. They found both victims dead from gunshot wounds to the body, Mercer said.

"All this had evidently been brewing for some time," said Fox. "Apparently [Poole] just snapped."

The 41-year-old Poole is being held without bond in the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center.

The Rest of The Story (posted by Justice_4All , Oct. 31, 2007 6:43 am)    0 likes
My condolences to the family, I'm so sorry for your loss. You will not hear nor read the rest of the story, or the truth of the matter from the media. The newspaper will only print what catches the public’s attention, picking & choosing parts of the story. They won't even print the 'other side of the story' if you ask them to. It’s all about selling papers, the mighty dollar. Unfortunately the readers are exceptionally quick to jump on the bandwagon before they know all the facts of a situation.

Feeling Lost (posted by missingroberts , Oct. 30, 2007 3:34 pm)    0 likes
My father and grandfather were very good people my dad and grandfather rarely drank. People can believe what they want, but I know that they didnt cause any of this, and they sure didnt deserve this. Losing my grandfather and father makes me fell lost. I will always miss them no matter what but I know there in heaven with my grandma.

I cant believe some of the comments on here. I agree with the comment by knudsen. I didnt know the father and i had only met the son once but i do know his kids. Who cares about what they were watching or what kind of chair they were fightin over. What kind of person would want to know that. Who cares if they were drinkin or not. The result is two men are now dead and two precious boys are without a father and a grandfather. Think about that while your worried about things the newspaper left out....

Tragic (posted by SCWannabe , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)    0 likes
I am shocked at the events which unfolded. I haven't talked to "Buck" (Robert Jr.) since high school due to being out "seeing the world." He was a few years behind me - but a heck of a nice guy. All through school (elementary to high school) I can't ever really remember him being angry. All I remember is his constant smile and laughter. His father, too, was a true gentleman. It is a shame that stupid things happen to nice people.

you had to know him (posted by browneyes1978 , Sep. 25, 2007 2:41 pm)    0 likes
Robert Jr was an all around good guy. He would do anything for anyone. I too worked with Robert he was a hard worker always willing to help out. You could also count on Robert for a smile know matter what kind of day he was having he was always in a good mood. Knudsen was right that comment was just rude anyone that knows Robert knew he hardly drank. All I can say is you had to know him. He will be missed by all that has had the pleasure of knowing him.
