Date published: 9/19/2007
DESCRIBE YOUR BUSINESS: A gymnastics and fitness program for babies as young as 3 months old and children of all ages and levels. Four years ago, we created MAJiK MOTiONS with our children in mind. We believed that if we wanted it for our kids, so would other parents! Our program is composed of physical, academic, social and character-building skills and is designed to meet individual needs and goals.
WHERE THE BUSINESS NAME CAME FROM: Adapted from the Majik Saints Gymnastics Team, owned by Jack and Linda Duncan of the Gymnastics Barn. Their daughter, Johnna, named the team.
EDUCATION: Both graduates of Chancellor High School (Kohl in 1993, McDaniel in 1992). Kohl got a bachelor's degree in English and secondary education from Longwood College. McDaniel has a B.A. in English and secondary education from Mary Washington College.
FAMILY: : Kohl married her high-school sweetheart, Howard. They live in King George County with their two daughters: Emma, 5, and Lilly, 2. McDaniel and her husband, Tommy, live in the Thornburg area of Spotsylvania with their daughter, Skylar, 4.
CAREER HISTORY: We began our teaching careers at Massaponax High School. We taught English, and also coached the high school gymnastics team together for several years. After having children, Kohl taught part time at Chancellor High while McDaniel provided child care for other teachers f or one year.
FIRST JOB: Kohl: coaching gymnastics at the Gymnastics Barn for the Duncans. McDaniel: working for a travel agency.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? Both grew up in Spotsylvania. They were cheerleaders at Chancellor High.
HOW DID YOU END UP OWNING MAJIK MOTIONS? We knew we wanted to be home more once our daughters were born. We also knew that we needed something to keep us involved with teaching and the community. Kohl approached McDaniel with the idea of a quality, creative and affordable program for children that incorporated gymnastics, dance and storytelling.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB NOW? The families we work with are wonderful. They are drawn together by a common goal: to enrich their child's life. Even if the child is not a future gymnast, all youngsters benefit from the physical activity and have a great time with it. We get attached to the children and truly enjoy seeing them grow up.
WHAT ARE YOUR CAREER GOALS? Increase enrollment without increasing our time commitment. We now have wonderful ladies working for us who are allowing MAJiK MOTiONS to grow while keeping us from spending too much time in the gym. Our top goal has always been more time with family. Perhaps as the girls get older we will look to expand.
