In response to the completely idiotic claim that the Woodstock crowd was the "moral better" of men like Sen. John McCain, all I can say is, "You've got to be kidding!" ["Woodstockers were McCain's moral betters," Nov. 10]. Was The Free Lance-Star so desperate to fill its opinion pages that they had to stoop to printing Sheldon Richman's drivel? Is this yet another lame attempt to try to justify the actions of the peacenik crowd? How can he say that those who participated in the perverted debauchery of Woodstock were somehow better than an officer who was carrying out his duty to the Navy and country? What an outrage! As a veteran of the Army and the Navy, I find it appalling that someone would think a bunch of dope-smoking flower children and hippies could do more good for this nation than members of the armed forces, who risked or gave their lives so that we can remain free and prosperous. If someone decided to print Mr. Richman's op-ed in order to generate controversy, you'll get it. If the FLS receives a lot of criticism for doing so, it will be justified. Roger W. Klein Stafford
If not for the Woodstock Hippies and their flower power portest McCain might still be in the Hanoi Hilton. It takes courage to stand up to the government even if you are sometimes whacked out on pot & LSD.
Yep, ol' Billy Boy was a dope smokin hippy who went to England to avoid military duty. Alas, George Bush was a drunk and coke snorter, who got his daddy to pull strings so he could serve in the Air NG so as to avoid military duty, He didn't even follow through with with his guard duty - arguably AWOL - which is worse . What's the old saying... Bush/Clinton supporters arguing this point is like prostitutes argueing who is more chaste and pure... Hillary is yet another though - you are correct there.
Unfortunately, the dope smoking flower children are in political office, schools and universities today.
Matter of fact, one was president twice and his wife now wants to be president.
But that doesnt make them morally better than McCain.
"perverted debauchery", "dope-smoking flower children" - how dare you say that! You know just how hard it was to slog your way through the mud at Woodstock - all the while tripping on LSD! Not easy budy!! BTW - the majority of those douche bags at Woodstock "sold out", became pro-cosumer, SUV driving, McMansion owning, polluting, debt ridden adults. They overturned the rules in the late 60s, then by the late 90s they left the next generation with debt and hopelessness. The WORST generation. A-holes!
Will the Vietnam War never be over? We have two extremes argued here, with McCain as a POW and the flower children on the other side. Frankly, I grew up in that era, and we see quite clearly people rehash that war like people rehash the civil war too. Sounds like the author treats flower children the way Southerners think of Lincoln. I would hate to run for President, trying to get a vision for the future with all this stuff going around. People who can't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
