Stafford teen cancer survivor hosts drive.
Date published: 11/8/2007 A chance to help people that need the gift of life is coming this weekend in Stafford County. This donor drive isn't for blood, it's for the national bone marrow donor registry. Seventeen year-old Robert Lane is a cancer survivor. His mom Christy says the drive is part of Robert's Eagle Scout project. Though he never had to have a bone marrow transplant during treatment, he's known friends who have and some that died without one. The test costs $25 and is charged to cover lab fees. Lane says the fee is paid by donors to avoid the patient having to pick up the cost. When they do have to it can get pricey since finding a matching donor can be difficult. The drive is being held at Liberty Lanes off Route 610 in north Stafford from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. this Saturday. Lane says you show up, pay the fee, complete a health form and give a one minute cell sample from your cheek. Once accepted, the donor's name is put into the registry for the some 6,000 people that conduct searches every day. Listen to Deirdre Blake's story
