I find it amazing that letter-writer Gary Manes would like people who probably make $9 or $10 an hour working at local businesses to subsidize others’ commutes to work so they can make $100,000 [“Why is Spotsy still holding out on VRE?” Nov. 12].
I am sure Mr. Manes would be hard pressed to find many Wal–Mart employees making $100,000 a year. We pay school taxes because that educates the future of this nation and provides for the majority; the VRE provides for a very tiny minority in Spotsylvania. It seems to me the solution would be to move closer to the workplace. John Griffin Spotsylvania
The fact is that if your making $9 or $10 dollars an hour you are paying very little if any stae and federal taxes. Who is paying for they're kids schooling and other social services? The higher paid earners who work up north. Can't have it both ways.

Would New York city be the great city it is today if they had your attitude of "I don't use it so i don't care"? It would not. NYC NEEDS it subways. People in NYC pay taxes to fund the mass transit becuase it brings more than a way to get to work. It has a much further reaching impact. However, VRE is not a viable solution with the traffic that shares the rail (Frieght, amtrak, etc...) and so many people living west of the line it's location reduces it's effectiveness greatly. Light rail anyone?
subsidize I-95 instead.
