Two-year inspection intervals for vehicles just will not do
Please do not lengthen the time for auto inspections to two years ["Car safety checks: Is two years too long?" Dec. 19]. The states that have no required inspections are only fooling themselves if they think safety numbers are roughly the same. We are not being realistic if we think insurance rates will not also rise as cars are allowed to be neglected for longer periods of time. My gosh, just look around in the morning at all of the moving "rat traps" on wheels in this state--and we do have inspections. Diane Beverly Spotsylvania
Using Ms. Beverly's rational, the only reason the majority of the population is law abiding and moral is because law enforcement is watching us. No, the majority of us do the right thing because we are moral people. In the same tone, the majority of us drive safe vehicles because we are concerned about our own safety not because we must have it inspected and taken care of. Give the people of VA more credit than that!
I lived in a state that did not require inspections. What they did, however, was set up ad hoc inspection spots on the roadway. If you got pulled over and inspected and your car failed...there were major fines. If we go to 2 year inspections, something like this should go along with it to keep people more or less honest.
