Wine and tapas bar coming soon
Owners of Kybecca wine shop opening wine and tapas bar

BY BILL FREEHLING The owners of Kybecca Wine & Gourmet will open a wine and tapas bar next to their William Street store in downtown Fredericksburg. Married couple Kyle and Rebecca Snyder opened the wine specialty shop at 402 William St. in March 2005. They're now starting a wine and tapas bar next door at 400 William. "We are bringing to Fredericksburg its first real-live wine bar," Kyle Snyder said this week while taking a break from gutting the inside of 400 William. American Home Mortgage had leased the space that will hold the wine and tapas bar. That company went bankrupt last year as part of the nation's mortgage problems. The Snyders will now rent both spaces from building owner Bill Johnson. A door connects the wine shop and bar. They plan to have about 40 seats outside and the same number inside. Tables will be set up in a heated outdoor area under an awning that will go around the building's front on William and Charles streets. Customers will be able to buy wine and beer from the shop and drink it at the bar for a service charge. The Snyders will also offer about 50 wines by the glass. There'll be a selection of tapas, which are small dishes and appetizers. There may at times be live music. The project has already gotten zoning and Architectural Review Board approval. Fredericksburg's JumpStart program, which focuses on downtown development, is assisting the Snyders. The JumpStart program contributed $25,000 to the project for the heated awning, said Fredericksburg Economic Development Director Kevin Gullette. Gullette said the Snyders have also applied for some incentive considerations from the city through the Downtown Tourism Zone. A decision on that request has not yet been announced. Kyle Snyder said he hopes the wine and tapas bar will be open by the summer. The hours could be limited at first, but he said they'll eventually be open for lunch and through the evening. This is the third area venture for the Snyders. They also own the Kybecca wine shop near Ukrop's. Their stores sell small-batch wines, beer, cheese and other gourmet fare. This is the type of development downtown needs!

Water parks & gondolas are all fine and good, but small, independent businesses that open unique establishments are what will make Fredericksburg great. The City and the Economic Development Director should be working hard to get businesses such as this one opened downtown to attract visitors and create jobs. Currently there are many empty properties on William and Caroline St. Let's have financial incentives for small businesses to take them over and create a thriving local business district.
