Regional briefs Date published: 1/9/2008 By Jeff Branscome The University of Mary Washington ranked 14th on a national magazine's list of the 100 best values among public colleges. Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine looked at academic quality and affordability for the report, according to an article in the February issue. UMW ranked 20th last year. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill topped the list for the second straight year. The University of Virginia and the College of William & Mary placed third and fourth, respectively. The average UMW student's debt at graduation is $12,800, the report states. Annual tuition and fees for in-state students are about $13,000. The magazine puts the most emphasis on academic quality and includes data such as student-teacher ratios and graduation rates. More than 500 public colleges and universities are considered for the list. --Jeff Branscome
