King day observance touches on presidential campaign Date published: 1/22/2008 By Jeff Branscome A guest speaker at the University of Mary Washington said yesterday that she thinks Martin Luther King Jr. would support Illinois Sen. Barack Obama's bid for president.
Shirley J. Cordell-Robinson, who spoke at UMW last year on King's birthday, recounted a possible conversation between King and the late Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman elected to U.S. Congress and the first to run for president. "I know he's probably talking to Shirley Chisholm at this very moment," said Cordell-Robinson, a teacher at James Monroe High School. She said Chisholm would likely support Sen. Hillary Clinton, and say: "Martin, look at what is happening. We knew that one day it had to come to this America might just be ready to place a woman That's OK, Cordell-Robinson said King would say, "But I believe by the very same token God is grooming Barack Obama to become the voice of American leadership." --Jeff Branscome
Unfortunately, the Free Lance-Star only shared two sentences from a larger story/speech which standing alone stir up controversy. Why do respondents react so strongly to her comments about Barack Obama, yet completely ignore the equally endearing comments about Hilary Clinton? Although I’m sure that Mrs. Cordell-Robinson has a number of formal “credentials”, no one should have to prove their right to share their opinion. Perhaps her primary credential is that she understands the history behind her stories..
How can you justify printing this useless article? This is totally a non-story. A frickin' "possible conversation" between two dead people is not worth the ink used to print it. What is the purpose of this article? Slow news day? I don't think so! Some people should not be given a platform to speak if this is the psycho-babble they spew.
The man has been dead for 40 years there no way to predict where his political interests would lie today. She's making this assumption based on race alone.
this woman is either stating her OPINION of what she believes dr. king would think of obama - which she is entitled to have one and to state it, but that is all it is - HER OPINION. as such,it should be given only the weight it deserves and no more.. OR, she is blatantly using dr. king's reputation and name to foster a belief in folks unable to realize that is just her OPINION in order to curry favor for obama. while, the first reason is okay, the second does not speak well of her character.
this word has been used several times in this paper relating to statements involving dr. king or his holiday. usually, by someone trying to reverse something by using a word incorrectly. if you are going to scream "racist" look up the definition of a racist and you will see that it doesn't apply here, nor at the times it was used in the other posts. you can't stick a word in for effect and the word not a apply, by doing so it tends to make you look foolish.
