A member of the Caroline County Board of Supervisors was arraigned in Spotsylvania General District Court yesterday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Robert Joseph "Bobby" Popowicz, 39, was charged Feb. 3 after a car accident on U. S. 1 in Spotsylvania, said 1st Sgt. Liz Scott of the Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office.
Popowicz's trial is set for May 27 and he is represented by defense attorney Mark Gardner, said Commonwealth's Attorney Bill Neely.
Scott said Popowicz, who was found to have a .13 blood alcohol content, was arrested following the accident, which happened about 12:30 a.m. He was leaving the parking lot of BT's and making a turn onto U. S. 1, when his Silver Hyundai Accent collided with another vehicle, she said.
Scott said Popowicz's DWI was the only charge. After his arrest, Popowicz was then put into the jail van at the magistrate's office, Scott said, and was released on a $2,000 bond.
Popowicz, who is a loan agent for Flagstar Bank, was elected to the Caroline Board of Supervisors in the Port Royal district last November. He defeated Democratic incumbent Calvin Taylor, who had held the seat since 1992, and took office in January. Popowicz could not be reached for comment.

I wonder what his defense could be? Man up Bobby and plead guilty! Why should taxpayers' money (the ones who elected you) have to be spent on a trial when you are clearly guilty of the DUI!
