Two more girls come forward; more charges filed against teacher Date published: 3/1/2008
BY KEITH EPPS Two more girls have come forward with molestation allegations against a veteran Manassas teacher who lives in Stafford County. Ted Thomas Johnson, 48, was charged earlier this week with two counts in connection with the alleged molestation of a 13-year-old girl at his home on Horsepen Run on Feb. 18. Stafford sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy yesterday announced that Johnson is facing four additional charges involving two other girls. Both girls claim they were molested at Johnson's home. Kennedy said one girl was 12 when she was abused in June or July of last year: the other was 13 when the incident involving her happened in September. The new charges against Johnson are two counts of aggravated sexual battery and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. He is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. According to a Manassas City Schools Web site, Johnson is the band director at Osbourn High School and teaches fine arts at Mayfield Intermediate School. He has been teaching in Manassas for 20 years. An affidavit for a search warrant filed in Stafford Circuit Court states that the initial charges against Johnson stemmed from a sleepover last week at his home. The victim, who was spending the night with Johnson's daughter, told police that Johnson tried to pull her underwear down as she was sleeping in a guest bedroom on the second floor, the affidavit states. The girl said she woke up about 6 a.m. Feb. 18 and felt a hand on her left buttocks pulling on her underwear. She rolled over before the underwear came down and saw Johnson kneeling next to the bed. The victim's mother called Johnson later that day and asked him to explain what happened. The affidavit states that Johnson told her he'd merely gone into the room to check on the girl and to pull the covers up. Stafford Detective Shawn Efimenco reviewed the allegations and charged Johnson with taking indecent liberties with a child and sexual battery. Sexual battery is a misdemeanor. Police also seized Johnson's computers from the two schools and numerous tapes and disks from his home. It is not clear what led to the more serious charges involving the two latest accusers. None of the alleged victims are students of Johnson. Johnson has been suspended from his teaching duties pending the outcome of his cases. Anyone with information about similar incidents involving Johnson is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 540/658-4450. Keith Epps: 540/374-5404
