Family escapes Stafford house fire Date published: 4/8/2008
BY ELLEN BILTZ AND ROBERT A. MARTIN
A Stafford County couple whose home caught fire yesterday afternoon were able to escape the smoke and flames without injuries, said Lt. Mark Stone of the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department. Stone said the fire department got the call about 12:13 p.m. yesterday for a fire at 173 Truslow Road in Falmouth and arrived in five minutes. He said most of the visible flames were out within 20 minutes of arrival, but firefighters spent much of yesterday afternoon removing items from the home, which he said was "extremely loaded with combustible material." Workers from the regional landfill management board assisted in removing debris. Firefighters also worked with the family to remove personal items that hadn't been damaged, Stone said. He said that there was significant smoke, fire and water damage to the house, but an estimate has not been established. The residence was the home for 41 years of Richard and Peggy Curtis. He is disabled and was outside the residence when the fire was detected, family members said. He then went in and got his wife, said Phyliss Peek, Peggy Curtis' sister. "He wasn't going to leave without her," she said. Peggy Curtis had recently lost her job and, as a result, canceled their insurance on the house, Peek said. Firefighters from Falmouth, Stafford Courthouse, Mountain View, Berea, Fredericksburg and Quantico responded. Ellen Biltz: 540/374-5424
