THAT STOLEN BIKE KEPT SHOWING UP
Refusal to part with stolen bike lands man in jail
Date published: 4/22/2008

BY KEITH EPPS

A man's refusal to part with a stolen bicycle has landed him in jail, police said.

Dominique Williams, 25, was arrested following an altercation outside the Regal Cinema's Movies 15 in Central Park Saturday and charged with robbery and possession of stolen property.

Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said the stolen property was a $600 Diamondback mountain bike that a University of Mary Washington student had reported stolen on Friday.

The young woman had gone out of town last week and left the bike outside a friend's home on William Street, Bledsoe said.

That friend and another friend were at the Park & Shop shopping center Friday evening when they saw a man riding the bike.

The bike has distinctive markings, including a sticker from the owner's hometown in Connecticut, Bledsoe said.

The two friends went to the bike as it was parked outside Giant, police said. When the man they'd seen riding it returned, they told him it had been stolen from their friend.

Bledsoe said the man left, but returned about 10 minutes later and grabbed the bike from one of the friends and rode away. Police were called, but couldn't find the bike or the suspect.

Late Saturday, the same police officer responded to a reported fight outside the movie theaters. Williams was one of the combatants, and security officers told police that he'd ridden there on a bicycle.

The bike, which belongs to the UMW student, was recovered on the side of the building.

Bledsoe said the robbery charge stemmed from the allegation that Williams snatched the bike from the victim's friend.
