Motel finds unwelcome guest Date published: 4/23/2008
BY KEITH EPPS For the third day in a row, a Washington man was the recipient of free lodging in the Fredericksburg area, police said. Chances are he enjoyed the first two days a lot more than the third. Bryan Smith, 37, of Washington spent last night in the Rappahannock Regional Jail. The previous two days, Fredericksburg police spokeswoman Natatia Bledsoe said, Smith had stayed at the Hampton Inn in Central Park without the knowledge of management. Motel management became aware of Smith's visit, Bledsoe said, after renting a room to a guest about 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The guest opened his door and saw a man sitting on the sofa inside the room. The guest immediately left and reported his finding to the front desk. The guest assumed that the desk had made a mistake in his room assignment. But there was no one registered in the room. A hotel security guard found the suspect a short time later at the nearby Hilton Homewood Suites. Bledsoe said the motel surveillance camera showed the suspect coming and going since Sunday. He had a room key, but police don't know how he got it. Smith was charged with breaking and entering and defrauding an innkeeper. Keith Epps: 540/374-5404
