Second man charged in robbery of paraplegic man
Authorities charge a second man in home-invasion robbery of prescription drugs
Date published: 4/4/2008

BY ELLEN BILTZ

Another Caroline man has been charged in the robbery of Robert Newcomb, a paraplegic whose prescription drugs were stolen from him at gunpoint.

Norman Michael “Lunchbox” Roberts, 18, of Spotsylvania is charged with breaking and entering, robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony. He is suspected of going into Newcomb’s home, but was never seen by those who lived in the trailer.

Joshua Thomas Smith, 20, was charged the day after the robbery with breaking and entering with the intent to commit larceny, armed robbery, possession of a sawed off shotgun and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

He is suspected of playing the larger role in the break-in.

Newcomb told The Free Lance-Star on March 19 that a young man broke into his home, pointed a sawed off shotgun in his face and demanded his medications, especially Oxycontin.

Newcomb said he was asleep in his hospital-type bed when the robbery occurred.

He said the masked man left with a box of drugs and then returned moments later, wanting more.

Newcomb, however, did not have any oxycontin to be stolen.

Smith, who had previously only been identified as Joshua Thomas, has been charged with two counts of burglary and an additional robbery charge since the first charges were filed, Moser said, because of evidence that Newcomb’s home was entered twice.

Smith also picked up a conspiracy to commit a felony charge when Roberts was arrested this week, Moser said.

Moser said both Smith and Roberts are being held at Pamunkey Regional Jail under no bond.

Preliminary hearings in Caroline County General District Court are scheduled April 18 for Smith and May 23 for Roberts, according to online court documents.

This guy got the nickname "Lunchbox" because he goes around stealing people's lunches

They don't give the knickname "Lunchbox" to the Einsteins. These two knuckleheads with a sawed-off shotgun was a recipe for disaster, it's a miracle nobody got hurt. Hand held in the toaster? I like it. Making mental note.....

Try sawn off shotgun. I believe that is the proper term.
