Shaking a baby leads to brain damage
Shaken Baby Syndrome ad campaign in full swing.

Date published: 4/17/2008

During April's child abuse awareness month, people are being alerted about shaken baby syndrome.

Cathy Saunders runs a northern Virginia non-profit that brings the disease to people's attention and provides education. She got involved after her son Ryan was shaken at the age of eight weeks. Fifteen years later he gets around on a walker and in a wheel chair. The majority of the advertising comes in the form of billboards and displays on Metro and OmniLink buses.

When a baby is shaken, pressure is placed on the brain stem. Saunders says it almost always causes permanent brain damage and can lead to blindness, deafness, brain damage and even death. Every 25% of a shaken baby victims actually die.
