France to push for Olympic agreement
Sarkozy wants China to restart talks with the Dalai Lama.

Date published: 4/24/2008

PARIS (AP) - French President Nicolas says he will push for a European Union agreement on whether to boycott the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

Sarkozy says France is encouraging China to restart talks with Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, before the Aug. 8-24 games. France will hold the rotating EU presidency at that time.

Sarkozy has suggested he might skip the opening ceremony in response to China's crackdown in Tibet. He said in a televised interview Thursday that he hopes to reach an accord on a possible boycott among EU's 27 member states.
