Parents may tell their kids not to play with their food, but they're sure to join in the fun as one family-friendly rockin' band plays about their food. That would be Yosi and the SuperDads, who will be performing in Vienna this Sunday.

A number of the songs featured in this weekend's performance are from the band's award-winning "What's Eatin' Yosi?" CD--and feature cuisine from different cultures with just the right comical twist.

Through genres ranging from zydeco to calypso and punk/metal, the band captures the "flavor" of each featured dish with an added spice of humor, such as "Chicken Noodle Soup" for those noses full of goop, and "Eat, Repeat" (allowing the dad-performers to indulge in a chorus of burps).

Other numbers are from the "Under a Big Bright Yellow Umbrella" CD, which garnered no less than six national awards. These may include such grin-inducing favorites as the "Stinky Blues" (an ode to those damp socks and shoes), and "Hole in the Ground" (a celebration of wormhood).

As might be expected, Yosi and the SuperDads performances are chock full of audience participation. Throughout the show, youngsters will be bouncing and jumping to the beat or chugging along in lines for the train songs, and audience members may be called onstage to play the roles of a tree and a kitty stuck up in its branches.

But Yosi aims to involve the adults in the crowd as well.

"Parents enjoy watching their kids fooling around, but they might feel somewhat inhibited about getting up and moving around with their kids," he said, "So we tell the kids to go grab their parents and bring them out to dance with them." In addition, Yosi--who in his college days performed with a punk rock band--will often send out a wink and a nod directly to parents, such as a riff from "Stairway to Heaven" in the middle of a kids' song.

The SuperDads who accompany Yosi all bring the heart and humor of the experience of fatherhood to the stage. "They're all great musicians, but they're also dads," said Yosi, "Every one has a 'kid vibe' and knows how to connect with children.

"These dads love kids, and there's a natural warmth and playfulness that comes out that you just can't get anywhere else."

Yosi (also known as Yosef Levin), a father of four, was born in Israel, and brings much of his ancestry's spirit of relationship and sense of belonging to his music.

"With the experience of a live performance, not only do you enjoy the music yourself, but you're aware that there is a community of people around you who are enjoying it together," he said. "It's a great collective experience. Here the three or four of them are singing and dancing together and having a great time. The music brings families and communities together."
