Man charged with killing his baby daughter Date published: 5/1/2008
BY KEITH EPPS A Spotsylvania County man has been accused of shaking his two-month-old daughter to death. Anthony Lemontez King Jr., 22, is charged with felony murder, felony child abuse and causing injury to a child. The child died yesterday at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond as the result of an incident that occurred last week at the home of the baby's mother in Stafford. Stafford Sheriff's spokesman Bill Kennedy said the child died as the result of shaken baby syndrome. King was arrested Monday night before the baby died. The felony murder charge was added yesterday, police said. According to an affidavit for a search warrant filed in Stafford Circuit Court, deputies went to 40 Wayside Court about 7:30 p.m. April 23 in response to a call about a non-responsive baby. King and the baby's mother told police that they had gone outside to smoke about 7 p.m., the affidavit states. The baby was sleeping on the couch in the living room. When they went back inside about 15 minutes later, they saw the infant on her back with her eyes open. King picked the child up and determined that she did not "feel or act normal," court records state. The mother took the child and realized she was not breathing. She ran outside with the baby to her mother, who was sitting in a car in the parking lot. The grandmother took the child back into the home and performed CPR until rescue units arrived, the affidavit states. The child was rushed to Mary Washington Hospital before being flown to Richmond. Detective John Hughes went to St. Mary's the next day and interviewed the baby's parents. He also spoke with the child's doctor, who advised him of the seriousness of the injuries. The doctor said that the baby, who was on a ventilator and in critical condition at the time, had suffered "non-accidental" injuries. Police seized a number of items from the home, including assorted medical papers, clothing and other baby items. It was not clear yesterday what evidence led to King's arrest. The baby lived at the home with her mother and grandparents. King is being held in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. Keith Epps: 540/374-5404
