Webb, McDearmon, Satterwhite and Wright take top spots in Bowling Green election

Date published: 5/7/2008

BY COREY BYERS

Four winners in the Bowling Green Town Council election--Daniel Webb, Glenn McDearmon, Jason Satterwhite and Otis Wright--will be the first to serve four-year terms on the body.

That's because winning candidates with the four highest vote totals for the council will serve four-year, rather than two-year terms after yesterday's election.

The four will be the first affected by a town charter change that institutes staggered terms.

Earlier this year, the General Assembly approved those changes, and others, to the town charter.

The remaining three winners, Mark Mallin, Bobby Ketterman and Eric Hinson will serve two-year terms.

Those council seats will go up for grabs again in 2010. As a result of that election, winners in 2010 will serve for four years.

Mayor David Storke, who ran unopposed, will keep his seat again, this time for a four-year term because of the charter change.

Other changes in the charter include lifting the salary cap for the mayor and council members. The council will also be able to employ a town clerk and town treasurer rather than appointing them.

Satterwhite and Mallin are the newest faces on the Town Council. Members Susan Sili and T. Scott Haley did not run for re-election.

Satterwhite, 30, is a system dispatch coordinator for Rappahannock Electric Co-op and has served on the Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department for 14 years. He said stimulating economic development, improving services and utilities and "growing the the town while preserving its charm" were key topics in the election.

Mallin, 57, is retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center at the Naval Support Facility at Dahlgren.

Mallin, who said he's a member of numerous county clubs, said supporting town businesses, bringing in new businesses and community pride were his top three issues for this year's race.
