The Spotsylvania County School Board is considering allowing children of full-time employees who live out of the district to attend county schools tuition-free.
"We do see that this policy would be great for retention of our employees," Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Brenda Seals said at last night's School Board meeting.
Current policy requires students who aren't Spotsylvania residents to pay tuition of roughly $2,000 a year.
The school division will analyze the cost per child annually, Seals said, but does not anticipate it to exceed the amount of per pupil allocation from the state.
The new policy will affect about 80 students in the upcoming school year.
Attending the schools tuition-free will be a privilege based on the student's attendance, academic progress and behavior. It will also depend on space, program availability and grade-level capacity.
If feasible, students will attend the school in which the employee works or a feeder school. Students will submit annual applications to the principal to be admitted.
Applications are due June 1 before school begins in the fall.
Parents will be responsible for providing transportation. Children of temporary, hourly and substitute employees are excluded from the policy.
School Board members will have a chance to revisit the issue at the next meeting, June 30, when they may make revisions and approve the policy.

Should be a perk for division employees. Most surrounding divisions do this without a policy governing it, afterall, this is public education, not private.

I guess Spotsylvania's budget woes are over! If you can afford to waive those fees, then obviously you can afford to give the teachers who live/teach here a raise???
Sounds good!(posted by

Why not give the Superintendent a raise too, while you're at it. Hell, I've still got a few dollars left over at the end of the month. Might as well take it all!. . . Ok, ok, just kidding. But let me ask a serious question. Does getting elected to the School Board automatically do something weird to those peoples brains, or what? I mean, it seems like once elected they start looking around looking for ways to spend, spend, spend and it gets worse every year.

Ever year the School Board ask for more and more money to get the "job done." It would be very interesting to determine the "true" cost to educate a child. I would expect that it is much greater than the $2,000.00 provided in the article. This is an issue that the Board of Supervisors has no control over, it is totally a decision empowered by law to the School Board. I just hope the Board of Supervisors remembers this foolishness next year when again they will be asked to provide for money for "education."
