Paraprofessionals' pay even worse than teachers'
I've heard enough about teachers' salaries. Yes, beginning teachers should make more money for what they But what about the salaries of school employees who are not teachers? I am a paraprofessional (teacher's assistant) in an elementary school. I teach small groups of students, help with bus duty and breakfast duty, take over for teachers as needed, answer phones, make copies, help the custodians, and boost children's egos when they need Want to know what my salary is for all that since no one probably has any idea? Take a guess, and make sure you are holding your chin so your mouth doesn't fall open. I signed a contract for the 2008-2009 school year for Sure, some will say, "Well, go get a job someplace else that pays more." But why should Who can afford to continue working in Stafford County for the salaries we get? How much money do the people Marie Jackson Stafford
Marie is not complaining or whining...she, like the rest of us, are trying to educate the community and advocate for a competitive wage. My colleagues and I were speaking with BOS Milde a few weeks ago at a Tuesday night BOS meeting and he had NO idea that many SCPS employees had that low of salary. He clearly needed to be educated on that topic! Marie is simply trying to raise the awareness in the community.
We are tired of hearing the same argument from you and your "buddies" too!
Yes, don't let those mean, teacher /paraprofessional bashers get you down. We know you are invaluable to the education of the children in Stafford County. Thank you for choosing to work in education because you love your job and don't do it for the money. You and I both know we are simply trying to educate the community and advocate for quality funding to better our schools. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that!
Stafford County paras start at closer to $13,000 per year! The $17,600 is for a para with more years of experience. I have a friend who is a para in Stafford County. She has a college degree in Elementary Education and many years experience working with children but does not hold the necessary credentials to teach here. One year she taught for Stafford County and attended college at night in an effort to meet the requirements, but went back to being a para as teaching and college at night was too much.
I have worked as a Substitute Teachers for four years now. We have never received a raise yet most of us work for peanuts and popcorn... I am now beginning to see a lower caliber of Substitutes coming in and only say, "you get what you pay for."
I pour my heart and soul into all the students I teach. I certainly don't do it for the money but $70 a day for the last four years just doesn't go very far.....
The pay that you figured out is based on a 40 hr wk/52 wk job. However, to actually figure out the rate per hour, you would need to divide $17,600 by the number of days in the contract (maybe 180?) then divide that by the number of hours worked in a day (8?) which would give you $12.22/ hr The paychecks, however, are distributed equally so workers can be paid during the summer as well. Just my .02 I'm a para too but not in Stafford.
