Caroline picks new schools leader
Caroline County hires new school superintendent

Date published: 6/13/2008

BY JEFF BRANSCOME

A school chief in Southwest Virginia will be Caroline County's next school superintendent.

Gregory Killough, who has been a superintendent in Wise County since 2005, signed a four-year deal and will make $120,000 annually, said Caroline School Board member Tamara Redding.

He will replace Caroline Superintendent Stanley Jones, who is retiring, on July 1. The School Board voted 4-0 this week to hire Killough. Member Frederick Peatross abstained. Killough was one of three finalists for the job.

"He is a very good listener," Redding said. "He's not a rash individual in any way."

Killough could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Redding said Killough has two daughters who attend the University of Virginia at Wise. His youngest daughter, Abigail, will be a junior at Caroline High.

He started out as a technology education teacher in Warrenton in 1982 and also has experience as an assistant principal and principal in Virginia Beach and Campbell County.

He was an assistant superintendent of instruction in Franklin County before moving to Wise.

Redding praised Killough's system for evaluating school employees in Wise.

"It makes it much easier for people to be successful if they know what's expected of them," she said.

Killough received a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Virginia.
