Starting this fall, children of full-time Spotsylvania County school employees who live outside the district will no longer pay tuition. Students also will receive full credit for late work deemed "acceptable." Here's a look at policies the School Board recently approved: TUITION-FREE The division is waiving tuition for children of full-time, out-of-district staff for employee retention purposes, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Brenda Seals has said. Originally, students who didn't live in the county paid about $2,000. The policy affects roughly 80 students. Officials do not anticipate the cost per child annually to exceed the amount of per pupil allocation from the state. Students will submit applications to the principal to be admitted and will be evaluated each year. Applications are due June 1. STUDENT ATTENDANCE Students with excused absences will get full credit for late work that meets teachers' standards. "I'm really trying to separate the attendance issue from the real mission of the school, which is mastery of the material," Superintendent Jerry Hill said last week. Students who receive zeros for late work often get discouraged and don't attempt to make up their work, Hill said. Deductions to grades will be based on quality of work, not absence. Board member Ray Lora supported the policy with hesitation, saying this could imply that students may miss days without consequences. Administrative officials maintain parents are responsible for ensuring that their children are in school. Those who fail to do so may end up in court. Punishment for excessive absences may include in-school suspensions and loss of privileges in parking and school activities (prom, for example). INSTRUCTIONAL CALENDAR The school division received about 3,000 responses from staff and parents in an online survey.
