FRIEND: SUSPECTS STARTING OVER

Friend says two were starting their lives over together.

UPDATE (9:16 a.m.): Two suspects in the abduction of a Fredericksburg food delivery driver who was found dead face an Aug. 7 preliminary hearing in a Fredericksburg court.

Jermaine Lamont Montgomery, 34, and his girlfriend, Marcey Odessa White, 36, have been charged with abduction, carjacking, credit card theft and conspiracy following Yong Hui Zhang's disappearance.

Each was arraigned this morning by video from the Rappahannock Regional Jail. A judge appointed court appointed attorneys for the defendants, who were brought into the room separately in orange jump suits.

Two suspects charged in connection with the slaying of a Fredericksburg deliveryman might have been on their way to Connecticut to start a new life, a family friend said yesterday.

Marcey White, 36, and her boyfriend, Jermaine Montgomery, 34, had both served prison sentences during which Montgomery learned the trade of welding, said the friend who knows White and her family.

The pair were traveling through Fredericksburg with plans for Montgomery to begin work in Connecticut when they apparently ran short on money for food and bus tickets, said the family friend who asked not to be identified because of the severity of the crime.

Police said it's not clear how the couple got to Fredericksburg.

Yong Hui Zhang, 24, was reported missing by his parents Thursday night when he didn't return from making deliveries for the family's Chinese restaurant.

Police determined Zhang made his first two deliveries and found a large amount of blood where the third delivery was to take place. That site was at 202 Charles St., a vacant apartment building in Fredericksburg.

Remains believed to be Zhang's were found in Sussex County early Sunday morning, 8 1/2 hours after police arrested White and Montgomery in the city of Franklin.

People who knew Marcey White when she lived in Fairfax County acknowledge she had problems but said it was hard to imagine her participating in an ambush and killing.

"I really can't picture Marcey condoning that or being a part of that. It's just not Marcey," said a woman who is a longtime friend of the family and lives in Fairfax County.

On her MySpace page, White lists Sterling as her home. However, police and acquaintances said that she has family in Virginia Beach and that Montgomery has friends and family in southeastern Virginia.

Montgomery and White each have one child, the acquaintances said.

Prince William Circuit Court records show Montgomery was convicted of robbery in 2001. He subsequently spent about three years in prison, getting released on Jan. 31, 2005, according to Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor.

IN HER WORDS

On her MySpace page, Marcey White posted the following:

"Can someone please tell me why life has to be so damn hard??? why can't we just be good people and live our life, why does it always have to be drama? why do the people with bad personalities get everything they want and the ones with the good have to struggle and fight so hard just to survive?"

--Posted in January

"Life is not like a box of chocolates. It is more like a jar of jalepenos. What you do today-might burn your ass tomorrow."

--The sentiment is included on a graphic she added to her MySpace page.

"since my mom passed away 8 months ago, i have a new love of life and don't have any more time to waste it."

--This is listed as one of her interests.

Death Penalty! (posted by Nikkee , July 9, 2008 1:41 pm)
If you're headed to Connecticut to start a new life, and coming from VA beach or Sterling VA, how do you run out of money in Fredericksburg? That's some really poor planning! These two made a decision to take a life and now the State of VA is going to take theirs! My sympathies and prayers go out to the Zhang family.

Also to add - Seems the Zhangs were the ones that had the "starting over" part right! (posted by SkiBumMSP , July 9, 2008 10:18 am)
At least the Zhangs were doing something productive in starting a business that contributed to the local economy as well as being a valued part of this community. And now these two thugs pretty much ruined it for them as well as this community. After all, what did they contribute to their community, besides trouble? I hope the Zhangs reopen their restaurant, as I will certainly stop by and eat there to show my support. My heart definitely goes out to the Zhangs for this terrible and senseless tragedy.

Don't give this "Woe's is me" crap! (posted by SkiBumMSP , July 9, 2008 10:08 am)
Really - cry me a friggan river! I am not buying it! What these two did was cold-blooded murder, pure and simple! What a way to "start over"! Yeah, placing a bogus order to a local restaurant, and then killing the delivery driver and taking his car and money (and assuming, the food as well). Yeah, that is really "starting over"! Heh! They had absolutely no regard for Mr. Zhang, his family, nor this community. Does not surprise me there is no sympathy for these two thugs around here!

What? (posted by rikkirat , July 8, 2008 11:56 pm)
Are we all supposed to go "ahhhh that's so sad"? Sorry, not gonna happen - now cook 'em both!

Needed money for food and bus tickets??? (posted by guitarslayer48 , July 8, 2008 11:38 pm)
Check the convenience store photo where Montgomery was caught using the stolen credit card, He wasn't buying food or bus tickets -- i believe it was three 12-packs of beer...
